He tendered his resignation at the Dean's office on Monday.
In his resignation letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of DU, he said: "I am resigning from the post of dean of the Faculty of Arts. Please take the necessary measures in this regard."
Earlier in the day, students gathered in front of the Arts Faculty from 11:30am, demanding Prof Bashir's resignation.
AB Jubayer, co-coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, was present at the protest.
Jubayer alleged that Prof Bashir was involved in attacks on DU students and had previously sought to punish students who joined a Quran recitation program on campus during Ramadan.
He also claimed that Prof Bashir had issued a show-cause notice to the chairman of the Arabic Department over the same incident.
Jubayer criticized Prof Bashir as a proponent of autocracy and provocateur, stating that he was unfit to hold an important position like the dean of the Faculty of Arts.
In response to the protest, the students escorted Prof Bashir from his room on the third floor of the Arts Building to the Dean's office around 12pm, where he drafted his resignation letter on the official pad of the Faculty of Arts.
Following the resignation, there was a recitation from the Holy Qur'an, and a prayer was offered seeking peace and discipline at Dhaka University and throughout the country, as well as expressing concern over Islamophobia and hostility toward the Quran.
Prof Bashir participated in the prayer session.
ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের (ঢাবি) কলা অনুষদের ডিনের পদ থেকে পদত্যাগ করেছেন অধ্যাপক আবদুল বশির।
সোমবার ডিনের কার্যালয়ে তিনি পদত্যাগপত্র জমা দেন।
ঢাবি উপাচার্যকে উদ্দেশ্য করে পদত্যাগপত্রে তিনি বলেন, "আমি কলা অনুষদের ডিনের পদ থেকে পদত্যাগ করছি। অনুগ্রহ করে এ বিষয়ে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা নিন।"
এর আগে বেলা সাড়ে ১১টা থেকে অধ্যাপক বশিরের পদত্যাগের দাবিতে কলা অনুষদের সামনে জড়ো হন শিক্ষার্থীরা।
বিক্ষোভে উপস্থিত ছিলেন বৈষম্য বিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনের সহ-সমন্বয়ক এবি জুবায়ের।
জুবায়ের অভিযোগ করেন যে অধ্যাপক বশির ঢাবি শিক্ষার্থীদের উপর হামলার সাথে জড়িত ছিলেন এবং এর আগে রমজান মাসে ক্যাম্পাসে একটি কোরআন তেলাওয়াত অনুষ্ঠানে যোগদানকারী শিক্ষার্থীদের শাস্তি দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করেছিলেন।
একই ঘটনায় অধ্যাপক বশির আরবি বিভাগের চেয়ারম্যানকে কারণ দর্শানোর নোটিশ দিয়েছেন বলেও তিনি দাবি করেন।
জুবায়ের অধ্যাপক বশিরকে স্বৈরাচারের প্রবক্তা এবং উসকানিদাতা হিসেবে সমালোচনা করেন এবং বলেন যে তিনি কলা অনুষদের ডিনের মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদে অধিষ্ঠিত ছিলেন।
প্রতিবাদের প্রতিক্রিয়ায়, শিক্ষার্থীরা দুপুর ১২টার দিকে কলা ভবনের তৃতীয় তলায় অধ্যাপক বশিরকে তার কক্ষ থেকে ডিনের অফিসে নিয়ে যান, যেখানে তিনি কলা অনুষদের অফিসিয়াল প্যাডে তার পদত্যাগপত্রের খসড়া দেন।
পদত্যাগের পরে, পবিত্র কোরআন থেকে তেলাওয়াত করা হয়েছিল এবং ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এবং সারা দেশে শান্তি ও শৃঙ্খলা কামনার পাশাপাশি কোরআনের প্রতি ইসলামফোবিয়া এবং শত্রুতার বিষয়ে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করে প্রার্থনা করা হয়েছিল।
